VW Unveils ID.Buzz Electric Van for North American Markets

The version of the ID.Buzz electric van that will be available in North America has been revealed by Volkswagen, and it has more to offer than just a three-row design with two extra seats. This van is not simply a stretched version of the modern Microbus, as it features a larger 91kWh battery (compared to 82kWh for the two-row), a more powerful 282HP rear-wheel drive motor (compared to 201HP), and a higher top speed of 99MPH (compared to 90MPH). Although there is no information on its range yet, an optional all-wheel drive configuration with a 330HP dual-motor system will also be available. This makes it an ideal choice for roadtrippers and growing families.

While the interior technology remains largely unchanged from the two-row model, it’s not necessarily a negative. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment display measure 5.3 inches and 12.9 inches, respectively. However, the larger ID.Buzz features the user-friendly interface found in the ID.7 and boasts eight USB-C ports, which is convenient for passengers in the back who need to charge their phones. The three-row electric vehicle also comes with Level 2 driver assistance as standard, including lane centering, and the cabin lighting is customizable and doubles as a status indicator for various features, such as charging levels and navigation directions.

The North American van boasts the biggest panoramic roof among all Volkswagen cars, measuring 67.4 inches in length. Its electrochromic glass technology allows it to become opaque when not in use. Additionally, there is a 110V outlet located beneath the passenger seat and a 12V port in the cargo area to charge more equipment. The standard audio system has nine speakers, but a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is also available as an upgrade.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal the pricing for the upcoming North American ID.Buzz, which is set to debut in 2024. It is unlikely to be as affordable as the iconic Microbus, however. The Buzz Style, a similar two-row model, is currently priced at £63,715 (approximately $79,240) in the UK, including taxes. The ID.Buzz is expected to appeal to eco-conscious drivers seeking a modern take on a classic vehicle, as well as EV enthusiasts who require more space than the ID.4 crossover offers.
