December Update Introduces 5 New AI Features for Pixel Users by Google

Google Pixel devices are known for being the first AI devices, offering access to some of the best on-device and cloud-based AI features like Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur. In December’s feature drop for Pixel phones, Google has introduced more AI-powered features for Pixel devices along with important security updates.

Here’s a look at five new AI-centric features coming to various Pixel devices:

Video Boost for Pixel 8 Pro

This feature leverages the Tensor G3 chipset and Google Cloud capabilities to allow users to get processed videos that not only look better, but can also be improved in terms of exposure thanks to NightSight in video. The process involves capturing a second video while recording and adds data. Both clips are then sent to Google’s servers while you’re connected to Wi-Fi, and when processing is complete, Google sends you a Photos notification.

Gemini Nano enables summary in recorder and smart reply in WhatsApp

With the addition of Google’s latest AI model, the Recorder app now allows users to use the Summarize feature to create summaries of conversations, interviews and more without an internet connection. In addition, Gboard’s Smart Reply feature can be used on WhatsApp, allowing users to create contextual replies. This is also only available for the Pixel 8 Pro.

Blurring the photo increases support for dogs and cats

Previously, the Photo Unblur feature could only sharpen photos of people. Now Google states that AI can be used to improve the clarity of photos of your pet dog or cat, which can be challenging to capture, often resulting in blurry images.

Better portrait lighting effects

Google Photos introduces a new AI model that allows you to balance portraits, whether they’re old or new. This is achieved by removing harsh shadows and adjusting the overall lighting. This feature is available for the Pixel 6 series and later.

Night Timelapses look better on the Pixel 8 series

This feature is available on both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro and allows users to capture more detailed timelapse videos at night. All you have to do is keep your device on a flat surface or stand.
