Indian Govt Seeks $12 Billion in Tax Revenue from Online Gaming Companies Following Recent Amendments

NEW DELHI: India’s tax authorities have served online gaming companies with notices demanding about a trillion rupees ($12.03 billion) in taxes allegedly evaded, a government source said on Wednesday.

In August, India decided to impose a 28 percent tax on online gaming companies on funds deposited to play online games, leading some companies, such as the Mobile Premier League, to lay off workers.

“The amount for which show cause notices have been sent to online gaming companies is around one trillion rupees,” an unnamed government official told reporters.

The Ministry of Finance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
