Microsoft is laying off 559 employees as the Seattle area sees the largest 2,700 job cuts
Microsoft has laid off 559 employees in Bellevue and Redmond, Washington, USA, bringing the company’s total layoffs in the region to more than 2,700.
The layoffs, announced by the Washington State Department of Occupational Safety and Health, tested Microsoft’s safety operations, The Seattle Times reported.
The company announced an earlier round of layoffs in February that also saw 617 workers laid off in Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah.
Hundreds of employees reportedly cut security roles under Charlie Bell, the former Amazon Web Services executive who joined Microsoft in 2021.
A Microsoft spokesman said the latest layoffs “are part of an effort to align our cost structure with our revenue reported in January.”
So far, tech companies based in or based in Washington have announced more than 32,000 job cuts.
Earlier this month, Microsoft implemented a third round of layoffs affecting supply chain, artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT)-related employees.
According to CRN, the third wave of layoffs is part of the 10,000 job cuts Microsoft announced earlier this year.
The layoffs concerned different levels, functions, teams and geographies, according to the report, the company is quoted.
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella announced in January that the company is “making changes that will result in a reduction of 10,000 jobs in our total workforce by the end of Q3 23 (third quarter).”
The company employed more than 220,000 employees, and the layoffs affected about five percent of its personnel.
