Hyundai Unveils Powerful Ioniq 5 N Electric Vehicle
Hyundai has unveiled the electric Ionic 5 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. According to the automaker, this upgraded variant of the Ioniq 5 boasts impressive acceleration, capable of reaching 62MPH in just 3.4 seconds, and a maximum speed of 161MPH.
The company completely redesigned the Ioniq 5 for this model, which is its first performance N-branded production vehicle. There are front and twin engine versions of the EV. Opt for the latter, and Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N is capable of producing 641 horsepower when boost mode is active. In normal use, you might get 600 horsepower and 545 pound-feet of torque, though the automaker admitted those numbers aren’t final.
Although the Ioniq 5 N has the same battery pack that previously stored 77.4 kWh of usable energy, thanks to the renewed chemistry, the electric car can produce 84.0 kWh, as Car and Driver points out. The battery has an updated thermal management system that includes “an increased cooling area, a better engine oil cooler and a battery cooler,” Hyundai says, all of which should help maximize performance.
It has a new regenerative braking system with 40cm diameter discs at the front and 36cm discs at the rear. The EV is lower and wider at the bottom than the regular Ioniq 5 to accommodate the wider 21-inch wheels. A more prominent diffuser, which should increase downforce, also extends the length by 80 mm.
Hyundai has yet to announce pricing for the Ioniq 5 N, which is scheduled to go on sale in early 2024. The company has yet to reveal the lineup for the electric car, though we should learn both key details in the coming months.
