As elections approach in different regions, the worry over AI deepfakes is intensifying. In an effort to combat this issue, Meta Platform has made a significant move by requiring users to disclose any AI-generated content they upload on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Meta has stated that it will take strong measures against users who fail to disclose watermarked AI images, videos, or audio. Furthermore, the company is developing a tool to identify AI content on all its platforms. Find out more about Meta’s strategies to address the problem of deepfakes.

Meta’s take on AI fakes

According to a report by The Verge, Meta is starting to highlight AI-generated content to improve transparency across its various platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Threads. The company says it will take action against users who upload realistic content that reveals AI-generated or watermarked content. Meta’s director of global affairs, Nick Clegg, emphasized in an interview that these measures allow the technology industry to distinguish between artificial intelligence and reality. In addition, the White House has also urged companies to integrate watermarks into AI photos and videos.

With this initiative, Meta will begin watermarking images with “Imagined with AI” created with the Imagine AI generator. It’s also starting to mean the same for content created with other AI tools from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock. Clegg said: “We are going to be quite vigilant for those who are concerned about video or audio content designed to materially mislead the public on a matter of political importance ahead of the election.” In addition, Meta is developing tools to identify synthetic media, regardless of how much metadata has been edited to hide the use of artificial intelligence. Chegg also highlighted measures for content uploaded with ads, saying: “Applicable penalties run the gamut from warnings to removal.”

This activity of Meta increases the credibility and transparency of social media, because the user can judge what is true and what is false. Therefore, the spread of fake news is also reduced.
