‘Modern Warfare II’ welcomes back beloved canine companion in triumphant return

Activision is reintroducing dogs, including one named Dogg, to Call of Duty. After ten years since the introduction of Riley, the loyal dog companion in Call of Duty: Ghosts, players can now bring Merlin, the adorable dog shown in the image above, to join them for both companionship and powerful finishing moves in season five (BlackCell) of CoD: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0.

According to Activision, Merlin the Dog is an optional companion in Multiplayer, Battle Royale, and DMZ modes. “[Merlin] offers an unmatched partner advantage as well as a devastating finishing move,” the announcement blog post reads. Oddly enough, players attach the dog to their belt when not in use. You can see one of Merlin’s brutal finishes in the trailer below.

Activision emphasizes that “tactical pets” such as Merlin cannot be harmed in-game. And since he’s only willing to perfect moves and friendship, he doesn’t seem to offer a competitive edge.

If you’re less into dogs and more into D-O-Double Gs, Activision has you covered, too. Snoop Dogg returns to the franchise, joining hip-hop powerhouse Nicki Minaj after his last appearance as a Call of Duty: Vanguard add-on in 2022. The new season five operator pack (including two skins) lets you play as the Long Beach rapper and cannabis connoisseur whose load includes the “Toke Force 141” SMG, the “Snoop Hustle” finisher, and the “High Rider” hatchback skin.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0 Season Five is available today for all platforms. The BlackCell level of the Battle Pass, which is required to enjoy the company of dogs, costs $30.
