The asteroid, named Asteroid 2023 XT14, is expected to fly past Earth at a distance of about 4.6 million kilometers today, according to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). It is already orbiting the earth at a speed of 22943 kilometers per hour, which is almost as fast as Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM)!
This space rock belongs to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which are space rocks that pass through the Earth and whose semi-major axes are larger than the Earth’s axis. According to NASA, these asteroids are named after the Apollo asteroid of 1862, which was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.
