‘Quake II’ Remaster Released for PC and Console Platforms

Confirming the speculations, Bethesda has officially revealed an enhanced edition of Quake II. The exciting news is that the game is available for immediate play on various platforms including PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, the upgraded version can be accessed through Game Pass on PC, console, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Furthermore, players who already possess the original game on GOG or Steam will receive a complimentary upgrade.

Nightdive Studios worked with Bethesda to modernize id Software’s 1997 first-person shooter. Relive the single-player campaign or experience it for the first time with Sonic Mayhem’s original soundtrack and all sorts of other enhancements. Visual features have been updated to include widescreen support, 120Hz refresh rates and 4K resolution.

Content that was cut at some point is back in an enhanced version of Quake II, which also includes a Nintendo 64 port. You can dive into the original expansions — Mission Pack: The Reckoning and Mission Pack: Ground Zero — which include over 30 additional single-player levels and 20-plus deathmatch maps between them.

There is also a brand new expansion called Call of the Machine. Wolfenstein: The New Colossus studio MachineGames (who work on the Indiana Jones game) built 28 new campaign levels and an all-new deathmatch map for this expansion.

Multiplayer features split-screen support, including local and online co-op for up to four players. You can battle it out in deathmatch, team deathmatch and grab the flag with up to 16 players.

The full crossover game is welcome on all platforms. However, if you’re using a PC and want to jump into the lobby with friends playing on a console or via the cloud, you’ll need to use a controller. This is to nullify the aiming advantage of keyboard and mouse players.

Last but not least, there are some welcome updates that make Quake II more accessible. Players will receive a notification about accessibility settings after installing the game. Options include high contrast, voice chat transcription, input remapping options, aim assist, and the ability to automatically switch to a new weapon when you pick it up.
