Apple Cancelled Android Compatibility for Apple Watch: Reasons Explained

Apple wanted to make the Apple Watch compatible with Android phones. That’s right, the company’s popular wearable could have worked with Android, but for some reason, Apple decided not to go ahead with the plan.

In fact, a Bloomberg report this week suggests that Apple had pulled the plug on that support at the last minute. Bringing the Apple Watch to Android would have opened up a whole new market for the company, where you have billions of smartphones.

So why did Apple cancel its plans to make the Apple Watch compatible with Android? According to the report, Apple focused more on making the Apple Watch a premium accessory for iPhone users and keeping it unique within the Apple ecosystem. That’s not all, according to the report, Apple saw the Apple Watch as a vehicle to boost iPhone sales.

The details of this development suggest that Apple was almost done with support for Android phones and other links under the name Project Fennel, but as with every classic Apple case, it decided not to open the platform to the most popular mobile operating system.

The report doesn’t give a timeline for when Apple had drawn up these plans and then scrapped it, but given the theme of the report, it’s likely that we’re talking about 4-5 years ago. It would have been fun to see the Apple Watch work with Android phones, which would have killed the Android smartwatch market before it even started. Imagine using an Apple Watch with a Rs 20,000 Android phone, that would have definitely changed the market dynamics.

However, Apple may have envisioned this scenario and feared the experience a user would have had with the Apple Watch because Apple didn’t have as much control with Android as it did with iOS. History doesn’t repeat itself, and now we’re left wondering what Apple could have gained by letting the Apple Watch work on non-iPhones. But Google would say that its Pixel Watch series is now slowly making up for lost time and we hope it succeeds just because of the competition.
