Apple’s Generative AI Technology May Lag Behind Competitors

According to reports, Apple is making efforts to enter the generative AI market, which is already dominated by brands like Google, OpenAI, and Meta, as Silicon Valley continues to invest in this technology and recognize its potential.

As spotted by MacRumors, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple may still be lagging behind its closest competitors in artificial intelligence. Kuo believes that Apple’s progress in generative AI is “significantly behind” its competitors — and as a result — he doesn’t expect Apple to discuss its AI goals in detail during its earnings call.

Kuo also believes that Apple will not integrate “AI Edge computing” technology into its hardware products in 2024. Because of this, it is unlikely that AI will play a role in boosting the company’s stock prices or benefiting the supply chain.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also previously mentioned that Apple is actively developing its own system, called ‘Apple GPT’. However, like Kuo, Gurman also believes that Apple lacks a “clear strategy” and has yet to confirm its plans.

Therefore, it remains to be seen how Apple develops and implements its AI strategy or whether it will be a product-first approach.

It’s also no secret that while Apple is working towards its AI goals, other companies have already made significant progress in the field of Large Language Models (LLM) for AI. Meta recently announced Llama 2 LLM, distributed through Microsoft’s Azure ecosystem. Google has also recently introduced its own LLM called PaLM2, which runs on its Google Bard chatbot.
