ChatGPT’s nonsensical responses are even more alarming than hallucinations

ChatGPT, a leading AI chatbot, is known for its popularity and innovation in the field. Despite its reputation, the chatbot is not immune to errors. While previous reports have highlighted instances of the AI hallucinating on certain topics, recent complaints from users indicate that the chatbot is now generating nonsensical responses to prompts.

ChatGPT problems

On February 20, several users reported that they were experiencing issues with ChatGPT. The AI chatbot is said to have changed the language by itself, got stuck in loops, corrected itself from time to time and even ate nonsensical answers. One user wrote on the ChatGPT subreddit: “I was asking ChatGPT for javascript code advice (we went back and forth a bit because the suggested solutions didn’t work) when all of a sudden it just started writing garbage.”

The user further elaborated that ChatGPT correctly worded the first sentence, but everything after that went south. Although the code it created was considered good, it was unable to string together sentences that often contained words from other languages, including even Latin!

On the subreddit, another user questioned whether ChatGPT lost it. “I chatted with ChatGPT about what the Bill Evans Trio would recommend for vinyl and it lost. As in the parameters passed to the API the temperature was too high. This has never happened before.”

Soon after, OpenAI acknowledged the problems and the ChatGPT status page read “We are investigating reports of unexpected responses from ChatGPT.” The problem was soon discovered and OpenAI implemented the fixes, after which it continued to monitor the situation.

Other problems

This is not the only problem that has plagued the OpenAI chatbot in recent months. In January, it was reported that ChatGPT leaked several private conversations in an unrelated chat. More worryingly, the leaked conversation contained not only the name of the user’s debugged app, but also login information, including username and password.
