Creating a Futuristic World: The Aspirations of a Robotics Manufacturer

Despite the challenges of parking due to its enormous size and the hefty price tag of $3 million, Ryo Yoshida remains ambitious about his drivable robot, which bears resemblance to the iconic “Gundam.”

At an impressive 4.5 meters (14.7 feet) tall and weighing 3.5 tons (7,716 pounds), “Archax” can be moved and controlled by a pilot who climbs into the high-tech cockpit.

“I want to fulfill people’s dreams that people once had as children, which is to get on a robot and control it just like in science fiction movies,” said Yoshida, CEO of start-up Tsubame Industries.

“This is a product that helps people get a taste of that world,” the 25-year-old told AFP at the Japan Mobility Show, where his monster was the star of the show.

Controlled in vehicle mode, “Archax” can travel 10 kilometers (six miles) per hour, according to the company.

It has 26 joints, including two huge arms, which the pilot controls with two joysticks, two pedals and a touch screen.

Yoshida suggests that one fun use could be combining multiple robots to shoot with toy guns, like in the “Gundam” anime series.

“This is a new sport that still doesn’t exist in the world. If I can do it, I think I could bring more excitement to the world,” he said.

He also envisions more hands-on roles, such as cleaning up ruins after disasters and working on construction sites.

Yoshida said his company’s goal is not only to create a robot, but also to develop a system to connect a human pilot with a machine.

“This is an idea where the pilot would not only get on board the robot, but also feel like he would become the robot himself, as if he would become a giant,” he said.
