Here’s what an Amazon Chief has to say about ChatGPT and its implications
Google, Microsoft, and many other companies are working on AI chatbots or partnering with companies that are developing them. But where is Amazon? We haven’t heard the brand make headlines or talk about its plans to compete with ChatGPT. It turns out that Amazon has already been working on an AI model like ChatGPT for a long time.
This claim was made by none other than Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who quoted this in an
interview
with the Financial Times this week. Jassy also said that ChatGPT is exciting and he is interested in seeing what is possible with generative AI. He also noted that such technology has been in the works at large and deeply technical companies, referring to Amazon in the same sentence.
It’s clear that Amazon has been a core player in the AI arena with the Alexa voice assistant built using machine learning. It even has tools for developers. But it’s easy to see how some of Amazon’s backers aren’t convinced by Jassy’s statement, especially as other tech rivals work briskly to join the AI bandwagon.
Microsoft has invested billions in open AI to get quick access to ChatGPT, which is already integrated into Office, Edge and Bing Search. Google has released an in-house solution called Bard, which appears to be a semi-mature product and is currently a work in progress. You even have the likes of Alibaba and Opera in this space.
And when asked about Amazon’s AI plans to counter those brands, Jassy said Amazon plans to partner with small businesses to strengthen its AI inventory. But once again, details were left out, which has clearly created a sense of dread among people in the industry.
Amazon might be working on something big, and it’s possible that seeing as Google’s accelerated rollout doesn’t go as planned, it could probably err on the side of caution and roll out the product when it’s ready for public service.
