India to cross $10 billion mobile exports in FY22-23, Apple leads with 50%: Report

On Wednesday, industry data showed strong growth in the fiscal year ending Wednesday, March 31, supported by attractive government incentives for local manufacturing.

According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), Apple’s “Make in India” smartphone now accounts for 50 percent of total exports.

Samsung is second with 40 percent of mobile phone exports, while the share of other smart phone players is 10 percent.

Smartphone exports from India have doubled compared to the corresponding period of the last financial year thanks to Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

According to ICEA data, India currently exports to the top five mobile phone export destinations globally: UAE, US, Netherlands, UK and Italy.

“The efficiency and maturity of the industry can only be judged by strong exports. The mobile policy and awareness initiatives have been relentless and the results are in front of us,” ICEA president Pankaj Mohindroo told IANS.

“Cellphone Industry exceeds $40 billion in manufacturing output and 25 percent export at $10 billion is a great achievement,” he added.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Tim Cook-led Apple would quickly move some of its Chinese production to India and Vietnam over the next 2-3 years.

India is likely to manufacture 45-50 percent of Apple’s iPhones by 2027, on par with China, where 80-85 percent of iPhones were manufactured in 2022.

According to DigiTimes’ research analysts’ estimates, India and Vietnam will be the biggest beneficiaries of the shift of the smartphone supply chain from China.

India’s share of the total iPhone production capacity at the end of 2022 was 10-15 percent.

Apple became the first smartphone player in India to export iPhones worth a billion dollars in December. It currently manufactures the iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 14 Plus in the country.

According to Mohindroo, the country is now moving in a different direction, “which is largely export-focused and led by the government’s performance-linked scheme (PLI).

The government is also looking to strengthen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem beyond mobile phones to increase its global share in hearing and wearables, IT hardware and electronic components, etc.
