The security agency of the Indian government has warned about the threat posed by the ransomware called Akira.News

Indian Govt Alerts Citizens to Potential Data Theft from New Ransomware

The government has issued a warning about a ransomware known as “Akira,” which is capable of stealing crucial information and encrypting data, potentially resulting in extortion.

CERT-In, the government’s anti-cyber technology department, issued an advisory about “Akira,” a computer malware that targets Windows and Linux-based systems.

It said it steals data and then encrypts the data in their systems. Once this is done, the malware performs double extortion and forces the victim to pay the ransom.

“If the victim doesn’t pay, they will post their victim’s information on their dark web blog,” the tipster noted.

Thus, CERT-In suggested that Internet users should adopt hygiene and security protocols to protect themselves from such attacks. It also recommended that users keep offline backups of critical data and keep it up-to-date so that it is not lost in the event of an attack.

The technology department also advised users to follow a strong password policy.
