Mark Gurman reveals odd situation regarding the launch of Apple AirTag 2: When can you expect to see it?

The Apple AirTag has gained immense popularity in recent years and has consistently proven its usefulness. It has been successfully employed in numerous instances to locate lost or stolen items, including wallets, bikes, cars, safes, potted plants, and even pets. Law enforcement agencies have also utilized AirTags to apprehend criminals. While concerns about potential unauthorized tracking exist, the positive applications of AirTags have outweighed the negatives thus far. As a result, Apple is said to be working on the development of the Apple AirTag 2. However, if you were anticipating its release this year, you will be disappointed.

AirTag 2 starts up

Why is this? Well, mostly because Apple is in a weird situation. In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that the Apple AirTag 2 won’t be released until 2025. The reason for that? Overproduction! According to the report, Apple has “clearly overproduced” the AirTag and its inventory is still full of them.

As such, the Cupertino-based tech giant won’t start production of the Apple AirTag 2 until late 2024, with the devices likely to hit the market in 2025. This report confirms an earlier claim by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. which revealed earlier this year that Apple has begun development of a second-generation AirTag. According to the report, mass production of the second generation AirTag could begin in the last quarter of 2024.

AirTag sales

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed last year that shipments of the AirTag have been gradually increasing despite receiving very little attention. At that time, according to estimates, 20 million and 35 million units were delivered in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Kuo claimed that if growth continued to rise, Apple would likely develop a second-generation AirTag, and this now appears to be true.
