NVIDIA Launches Free Version of ‘Portal: Prelude’ on Steam

NVIDIA has recently launched the 2008 fan-made Portal mod, known as Portal: Prelude, in an official release. The mod is now available on Steam and, excitingly, it is free for those who already own the original game. This updated version is far from ordinary, as it includes new textures, complete ray tracing, DLSS 3 to enhance performance, NVIDIA Reflex to reduce latency, and RTX IO for faster loading times.

NVIDIA also ditched the GeForce Game Ready driver to simplify installation. Modders made all the changes to the remaster in the spirit of the original release via the company’s upcoming RTX Remix creation toolkit. NVIDIA also hired famous modders to modernize the property and improve the lighting.

For the uninitiated, Portal: Prelude was originally released in 2008 and developed by modders. It serves as a prequel to the original game and takes place before the time of GLaDOS. The game offers a ten-hour campaign with almost 20 test chambers, a fully voiced story and mechanics that go beyond the first portal. It’s still the highest rated portal mod and there’s no shortage of competition.

This remake took eight months of developer time and serves as an introduction to the aforementioned modding toolkit, RTX Remix. Portal: Prelude is available right now on Steam and it won’t cost you anything as long as you have the original Portal, so start downloading.
