All Old Blue Ticks Will Be Removed Today, Elon Musk Says ‘Quite a Day’

D-Day is finally here for Twitter blue checkmark owners, and the microblogging platform was ready to remove all blue checkmarks at once on Thursday.

According to its CEO, Elon Musk, it’s shaping up to be quite a day!

On April 20, Twitter announced that “we’re removing the old verified checkmarks.”

“Individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue to stay verified on Twitter. Organizations can join verified organizations,” the company said.

Twitter Blue in India costs Rs 9,400 per year (or Rs 900 per month) for individual users.

Musk announced that users can also get Blue Verified for $7 a month if they log in through a web browser.

In its earlier effort to delete old accounts with blue ticks, the company apparently did not have the back-end technology to delete around 4.2 lakh old accounts at once.

According to The Washington Post, quickly eliminating so-called blue ticks at scale presented technical challenges, and the only way to do it at the moment was a manual approach.

Musk had previously given a deadline of April 1 to delete all old accounts with blue verification. So far, the company has only removed the blue tick from The New York Times.

Twitter also plans to award a $1,000 free checkmark to the top 10,000 organizations by follower count.
