Twitter disables two-factor authentication for text messages for non-blue users: Use this feature instead

Twitter has confirmed that all non-Blue subscribers will lose access to its two-factor security feature starting March 20. This means that if you don’t pay for Twitter Blue (900 rupees per month for mobile in India), you won’t be able to protect your Twitter account with SMS two-factor authentication. This odd decision has drawn flak from everyone pointing the finger at Elon Musk, but many security experts don’t think it’s the worst thing for millions of Twitter users.

If you don’t want to pay for Twitter Blue and still have two-layer protection, the platform has other options. Instead of using text messages, which are not considered the most secure option, you can switch to an authenticator app that offers better protection for your accounts. You can trust these apps from giants like Google, Microsoft and Authy. Users also have the option of using password managers to protect their accounts.

To be fair, Twitter has explained the reason for this move by citing potential threats from bad actors who can manipulate SMS verification by cloning or swapping SIM cards.

Securing your Twitter account with Authenticator

So how can you change this security setting on Twitter and secure your account? Follow these steps:

– Open Settings in the Twitter web app

– Click Security and account access

– Tap Security

– Go to Two-factor authentication

– Deactivate the SMS function by logging in with your password

– Click on Authentication Application

– You need to install one authentication app to start the process

– Scan the QR code you see on the web version of Twitter

– Enter the six-digit code to confirm the authentication process
