Unverified Twitter Users To Be Restricted On Number Of Direct Messages Sent

Twitter has revealed plans to modify the functionality of direct messages on its platform, imposing restrictions on unverified accounts (those not subscribed to Twitter Blue) regarding the quantity of DMs they can send. However, Twitter has yet to provide specific details regarding the limit for unverified users.

Under Musk, this isn’t the first time a previously free feature has been placed behind the Twitter Blue paywall. It’s almost become commonplace to see Twitter remove even the most important services — like SMS-based two-step account verification and access to Media Studio — now only for Twitter Blue subscribers.

“We’re rolling out some changes soon in our efforts to reduce spam in direct messages. Unverified accounts have daily limits on the number of DMs they can send. Subscribe today to send more messages,” Twitter said, followed by a link to subscribe to Blue.

It’s not yet clear what Twitter means by “changes,” but one thing is clear: Twitter is trying to create better incentives for users to choose Twitter Blue.

As part of Twitter Blue, users can get the coveted “blue tick”, the ability to edit tweets, send longer tweets of up to 25,000 characters and also send 1080p videos lasting up to 2 hours. Twitter also promises better reach and “about 50% less ads” for paying Twitter Blue subscribers.

Recently, the microblogging platform also opened up ad revenue sharing to eligible users. However, the opportunity to earn on Twitter is only reserved for Twitter Blue subscribers. To be eligible, users must have a Stripe paid account, be a verified user, and have had at least 5 million views on their posts in the last three months.
