US Regulator Warns of Potential Impact of Generative AI on Competition

The Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Technology and Office of Technology have expressed concerns about Generative AI, particularly ChatGPT, due to competition issues, according to a blog post by the staff of the two offices.

“Generative AI depends on necessary inputs. If a single company or a handful of companies control one or more of these essential inputs, they may be able to use their control to dampen or distort competition in the generative AI market,” the staff said in a blog post.

The message identified the inputs as large data sets as technology is developed, a well-trained engineering and research workforce, and computing power through specialized chips such as graphics processing units.

“The FTC’s Office of Competition, which works closely with the Office of Technology, is focused on ensuring open and fair competition, including at key inflection points as technology evolves. Generative AI represents one of these paradigm shifts,” the offices’ staff said.
