Exploring the New ‘Discover’ Feed on Jack Dorsey-Backed Bluesky Platform

In addition to the Twitter rebranding and updates to Threads, Bluesky, which is backed by Jack Dorsey, is also implementing significant changes on its platform. On July 27, the company announced a major modification to its feed. Instead of a simple system where popular posts are featured, the feed will now utilize algorithms to provide users with a more personalized experience, recommending new posts that align with their interests. The ‘What’s Hot’ feed will be renamed as ‘Discover’. Furthermore, users who are not fond of this new feed can opt for custom feeds to select content they prefer.

Bluesky is updating the feed

In a blog post, Bluesky stated: “To improve the default experience, we’re now replacing the ‘What’s Hot’ feed with ‘Discover’, a more complex feed that you can expect to evolve over time. Unlike ‘Hot’, ‘Discover’ is tailored to what you want to see, but still provides a view to network trends The original version of “Discover” mixes a global view of network trends with posts from accounts you follow and posts from accounts close to you in your social graph.

The message also added that it will also improve the algorithm in the coming days and the ultimate goal is to add more interesting content considering the interests of the users.

Bluesky’s custom feed

If users don’t like the Discover feed, they can always use custom feeds. If you don’t know what they are, here’s an easy explanation. Custom Feed is a feed algorithm marketplace where users can create feeds with a specific combination of algorithms to focus on a specific topic, user group, post style, and more, but they can also share it with other users.

This allows users to not rely on a company-supplied algorithm and instead choose something they are more interested in.

“Whether you want to subscribe to a feed that contains only cat pictures or messages only from each other, this is possible with custom feeds – think of them as super-powerful, more customizable hashtags or lists,” the blog post added.
