Google to Introduce Digi Kavach to Safeguard Indian Users from Cyber Frauds in 2023

The recently concluded Google for India 2023 event wrapped up in New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan. Alongside this significant annual gathering, a roundtable conference was held, featuring Google’s top executives discussing a range of initiatives and programs in front of a select group of media representatives. Notably, the event showcased the introduction of Digi Kavach, a novel program aimed at safeguarding users online and shielding them from fraudulent activities. Initially launched as a pilot project in India, this initiative will subsequently be expanded to other nations.

Saikat Mitra, vice president and head of trust and security, APAC, made the big announcement and said that this program was born out of concern for how to keep one billion Indians safe online. Digi Kavach was launched as a comprehensive and collaborative effort to secure users, he added.

Mitra also highlighted the technical stack of this new tool and its usability. He explained: “The first part is based on our technology in our advancements, AI and ML, which allows us to create really powerful and complete intelligence. So in the first part, we really look at, not just track how fraudsters operate, but identify what they’re doing and try to predict how they’re going to do things they think.

When asked if it is a security and anti-fraud tool, Mitra agreed and said it mainly focuses on financial scams in India. He also highlighted that Google is working with both RBI and NPCI and has established strong partnerships with both government agencies to ensure transparent flow of information.

Mitra also highlighted some numbers based on the success Digi Kavach has already seen. He said the tool has prevented scams worth Rs. 12 thousand kroner in GPay.

Mitra said of RBI, “I have said this many times that we (RBI and Google) are united in this goal. RBI is trying to protect the citizens of India and we are trying to protect users. It is the same mission. So I think we are united in what we’re trying to achieve.”

Currently, the release date of Digi Kavach is unknown, but it is expected to arrive in the country soon.
