Meta Threads could integrate Instagram’s inbox, and this would bring DM functionality to the platform, as Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has said.News

Meta’s Threads Get a Clever Upgrade: Direct Messaging is Coming!

When Meta’s X competitor Threads first launched, it lacked a lot of features. But Meta has been working hard to add features and is gradually becoming a better competitor to X. However, it still lacks some core features, such as the ability to send to anyone directly. This is because Meta didn’t intend to add DMs to it. But that may soon change as Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has revealed new details about the same.

Mosseri answered Threads for The Platformer News’ Casey Newton. Mosseri, who responded to Newton’s post, said Meta could integrate Instagram’s inbox into the Threads app. This would of course allow for direct communication. However, he says there is still a lot to do. The company has also launched the ability to send an Instagram contact directly from Threads without changing the app, but Mosseri believes that the platform “still needs to make it easier, improve the reception experience and work through a more comprehensive communication management system.”

At the same time, Mosseri also presented a list of problems that go against the implementation. “If we don’t end up getting the Instagram inbox to work in Threads, we’re going to have a hard choice between (1) mirroring the Instagram inbox in Threads and dealing with the quirks of notification routing and (2) building a completely separate Threads inbox and dealing with the fact that you have two extra threading with each of your friends with the same handles in two different apps. Neither looks good,” Mosseri explained.

Mosser’s arguments make sense, as Threads is almost an extension of Instagram with mirrored notifications. However, Casey Newton of Platformer News points out that this problem could be solved by providing a switch that allows users to set their preferences and allow them to choose between the two.

Threads is gradually adding features requested by users. For example, the app recently added the ability to edit posts for free, and now users can delete their Threads profile without having to delete their Instagram account entirely.
