Samsung Aims to Create Foldable Tablets

Samsung is the undisputed folding champion now that it has launched five generations of products, both folding and flip models. But the South Korean brand has seemingly taken it easy with its design approach in recent years, allowing other brands to catch up. Now, Samsung claims to be working on other designs with foldable parts because it’s part of human history.

TM Roh has shared the details of this futuristic product in a recent interview. Roh believes that tablets can be a very good product category where the company can apply the foldable form factor, reminiscent of people folding books and notebooks for different purposes.

He also explains the reason why Samsung makes so many foldable products and how they like the form factor of portability and compactness when you close (or fold) the device.

Roh also points out that Samsung invested a lot of resources in developing such a device (a foldable tablet), but he had no concrete timetable for the launch of this unique product. Foldables have definitely gone beyond phones, and Lenovo and Asus have introduced new foldable laptops that are sure to turn heads.

With Google launching its own Pixel foldable and promising to make Android compatible with big-screen devices, it’s imperative that Samsung relies on the mobile operating system for its upcoming foldable tablet, which according to reports will likely be part of the Galaxy Z series. The product is hardly considered in the affordable segment, just like we have seen with other foldable devices.

Roh has generally been candid about the company’s plans, and had previously talked about the decision to replace the Galaxy Note range with an all-new Galaxy S Ultra model with S Pen support, a move 12 months from now. We hope to hear more about the foldable tablet in the near future, especially with the likes of Apple expected to enter the fray with their own version of the iPad in the coming years.
