Hey Bixby, unlock my phone (Bloomberg)News

Samsung will soon add voice recognition support to unlock your phone

Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy S21 series early next year. While it’s safe to predict that the flagship phones will come with a big spec upgrade, Samsung has big plans for its Bixby voice assistant as well. According to reports, Samsung will add voice recognition support to unlock your phone.

Sammobile reports that Samsung’s One UI 3.1 will allow users to select Bixby Voice as the biometric method to unlock the device. The One UI 3.1 is expected to debut with the Galaxy S21 series. The software update is probably also available on other Galaxy phones.

At this time, it’s unclear how this feature will work. It should be noted that Google offered similar voice functionality with the assistant. However, the company removed the voice matching feature in 2018 for security reasons.

The new report comes weeks after Samsung rolled out a new update for its Bixby voice assistant. The new version comes with a new look that includes an updated icon and a visual refresh.

That said, this is the first big leak around a possible upgrade to the Bixby voice assistant. Samsung’s digital assistant has been featured on all of the best Galaxy phones for quite some time. Launched in 2017 to support Apple’s Siri and Google’s Assistant, Samsung has made various efforts to push Bixby among its users.

Obviously, Bixby hasn’t quite taken off the way Samsung would have liked. Google, meanwhile, continued to improve the Assistant for Android users. The digital assistant, which also supports Google Lens and voice commands, now enjoys deeper integration with a variety of Android phones.
