X Algorithm Update: Elon Musk Promises to Shine a Spotlight on Smaller Accounts!

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has announced a significant update to the platform’s recommendation algorithm. This update aims to enhance the visibility of small accounts and posts beyond a user’s immediate network of friends and followers. X has been rapidly introducing various features lately, particularly focused on enticing creators to share original content. This algorithm change is seen as another effort by the social media platform to achieve the same objective.

Musk posted on X: “There is a major update coming to the design algorithm in the next few days. This helps to find smaller accounts and messages outside of your friends network. As always, this is open sourced and continuously improved.” While no date has been given for the feature’s rollout, it could potentially be released by the end of this week. A gradual rollout is expected, meaning users around the world will slowly become familiar with this algorithm change.

X gives a boost to smaller accounts with algorithm changes

Musk didn’t mention any specific number that qualifies an account as “small” to qualify for this push. However, several reports have indicated that this is likely aimed at content creators, meaning that the lower ceiling will be kept significantly high so that individual accounts with a few hundred to a few thousand followers don’t end up spamming users’ timelines.

X has also added other features to be more creator-friendly over the past few months. These include sending longer text and video messages, editing messages, sharing advertising revenue, and more. In fact, in September, CEO Linda Yaccarino revealed in a post that the company has paid out nearly $20 million to creators.

According to a leak from X’s recent employee meeting, Musk revealed that the company is developing features related to segments such as streaming, audio/video calling, recruiting, news delivery, banking, shopping, dating and potentially more.
