Bug in iOS 17 Causes App Switching While Typing on iPhone

A new report has claimed that a growing number of iPhone users have discovered an annoying bug in iOS 17 that causes the app switcher to appear unexpectedly while typing. Several users have reported this error across platforms, indicating a widespread problem, MacRumors said.

According to MacRumors, on Apple’s community forums and on Reddit, many people are sharing similar stories of unexpectedly getting kicked out of apps like Messages and Notes while typing.

This happens because they accidentally tap the screen just as the app switcher appears, ending up in another app while typing.

The persistent iOS 17 bug seems to particularly affect users who type quickly with the virtual keyboard. The problem has been observed in all ‌iOS 17‌ versions, including the latest iOS 17.1.2 update.

Some users have even reported experiencing the failure with replacement devices, indicating that Apple may not be fully aware of the extent of the problem.

While the exact cause of the bug is still unclear, it is suspected to be related to iOS 17’s gesture recognition system. According to reports, the system may misinterpret certain typing gestures as app switching commands, leading to unintended behavior.

Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the bug, but it is expected to be fixed in a future iOS update. In the meantime, affected users can try to minimize the disruption by restarting their iPhone or temporarily disabling the app switching gesture.

While Apple is working to fix the problem, MacRumors suggests a temporary solution. Accessibility, an optional feature that lowers the top of the screen more easily, appears to be related to the typo. To disable it:

– Open ‌iPhone‌ Settings.

– Tap Accessibility.

– Under “Physical and Motor”, select Touch.

– Turn off the switch next to reachability.

When accessibility is turned off, the typo appears to block everyone affected, suggesting a possible sensitivity issue with this accessibility feature, according to the report.
