Google to Make Political Ads Clearly Show AI-Generated Content

Google has revealed its plans to combat disinformation in the upcoming 2024 Presidential election by mandating political advertisers to clearly disclose any AI-altered or -generated elements in their ads. This move aims to address concerns about the spread of manipulated media and will be implemented in November, following the guidelines of Google’s existing Manipulated Media Policy.

“As the prevalence of tools that generate synthetic content increases, we are expanding our policies a step further to require advertisers to disclose when their election ads contain material that has been digitally altered or created,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. Hill. Small and insignificant edits such as resizing images, cleaning up the background a little or correcting colors are all still allowed – those that depict people or things doing things they’ve never done or otherwise alter the actual footage will be flagged.

According to Google’s practice, advertisements that utilize artificial intelligence aspects must be marked as such in a “clear and visible way” that is easily noticeable by the user. Ads are first monitored through Google’s own automatic screening systems, after which a person checks them if necessary.

Google’s actions are at odds with other companies on social media. X/Twitter recently announced that it is reversing its previous stance and allowing political ads on the site, while Meta continues its own moderate ad moderation efforts.

The Federal Election Commission has also begun to consider the matter. Last month, it asked for public comment on amending a standing order “prohibiting a candidate or his agent from fraudulently misrepresenting other candidates or political parties” to clarify that “the related statutory prohibition also applies to intentionally misleading AI campaign ads.”
