NASA Reveals 140-Foot Asteroid to Make Close Approach to Earth

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now being utilized in the exploration and examination of asteroids, as revealed by recent news. AI has already proven its worth in numerous fields like education, healthcare, and engineering, and it may also play a crucial role in safeguarding our planet from potential asteroid threats. The University of Washington conducted a study that unveiled the effectiveness of an algorithm called HelioLinc3D in identifying a potentially hazardous asteroid. During its trial in Hawaii, the algorithm successfully detected Asteroid 2022 SF289, which measures nearly 600 feet in width. Fortunately, this asteroid is not expected to pose any immediate danger to Earth.

In a separate development, NASA has revealed an asteroid that is set to make its closest approach to Earth today.

Asteroid 2023 TL

As many as 1298148 asteroids have been discovered so far, and Asteroid 2023 TL is one of them. Named Asteroid 2023 TL by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), this space rock will make its closest approach to Earth today, October 9. As it approaches, it comes as far as 3.1 million kilometers from Earth. to the surface of the planet. It rushes towards the Earth at an amazing speed of 50124 kilometers per hour!

According to NASA, this asteroid is not large enough to be classified as a potentially hazardous object. A celestial body must be about 492 feet wide and pass Earth at a distance of less than 7.5 million kilometers to be considered a potentially dangerous object. Asteroid 2023 TL, on the other hand, is nearly 140 feet wide, making it the size of an airplane.

Asteroid 2023 TL Apollo Near-Earth Asteroids group, which is a space rock crossing the Earth with semi-major axes larger than the Earth’s axis. These asteroids are named after the huge 1862 Apollo asteroid discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.

Shockingly, this will be the first close-to-Earth approach in the history of Asteroid 2023 TL. According to NASA, it is not expected to pass by the planet in the near future.

Asteroids were used to combat climate change

We know that asteroids can cause great damage and even wipe out life on Earth. On the other hand, these space rocks can also provide us with valuable natural resources such as water, metals and other minerals. Scientists study asteroids to learn more about the early solar system and the conditions that existed when the planets formed. But now a method has been developed to protect the earth from the sun’s powerful rays in order to curb climate change. Designed by University of Hawai’i Astronomy Institute astronomer Istvan Szapudi, the move proposes a space-based solar radiation management (SRM), or shadow, attached to the asteroid as a counterweight.

The weight of the asteroid would reduce the weight of the sunshade and could potentially reduce solar radiation by 1.7 percent.
