Smartphone shipments in India down 16% in January-March: IDC report

Smartphone shipments in India fell 16 percent year-on-year in January-March to 31 million units, market research firm IDC said Thursday. Realme and Xiaomi’s shipments fell the most during the quarter.

India’s smartphone market is expected to grow steadily in 2023, an IDC report said.

“India shipped 31 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2023, down 16 percent from a year earlier and the lowest Q1 shipments in four years,” International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report said.

Despite the 11.4 percent drop in shipments, Samsung leads the market with a 20.1 percent market share, followed by Vivo with 17.7 percent.

Oppo was the only brand whose shipments increased during the quarter. Its market share was 17.6 percent.

Xiaomi’s shipments fell 41.1 percent to 5 million units and its market share fell to 16.4 percent in the reported quarter from 23.4 percent a year ago.

Realme shipments fell by more than half to 2.9 million units and its market share fell to 9.4 percent in the March 2023 quarter from 16.4 percent in the corresponding quarter of 2022.

“Consumer demand remained muted amid uncertain macroeconomic conditions, and inventory levels increased due to large inventories in the second half of 2022,” IDC said.

The share of 5G smartphones rose to 45 percent from 31 percent a year ago. The growth of 5G smartphones was driven by Samsung, which accounted for more than a quarter of the segment’s deliveries.

“5G smartphones continue to increase penetration in the budget segment and we should expect a strong 5G game in the $150-$300 segment in the second half of 2023 as high-end 4G models clear space,” IDC India Research Head, Client Devices, Upasana Joshi said.
