Time’s Up: EU Gives Meta Platforms Deadline to Tackle Child Sexual Abuse

EU tech regulators have instructed Meta Platforms to furnish additional information regarding the steps it has taken to combat child sexual abuse material on its Instagram app. Failure to comply by December 22 could result in a formal investigation under the new EU online content regulations.

In October, the European Commission sent the first request for information on the measures taken to prevent the spread of terrorist and violent content, and the second one last month on measures to protect minors.

“Information is also requested about Instagram’s recommendation system and the addition of potentially harmful content,” the European Commission said in a statement in its latest inquiry.

The information request was made under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA). New tech rules require Big Tech to do more to police illegal and harmful content on its platforms.

Failure to comply with such requests may result in formal investigation and even fines.

Chinese group ByteDance’s TikTok and Elon Musk’s X have also received similar requests for information.
