Google realises the need to consider making eSIM usage and transfer simpler and it is working towards that in 2023.News

Android phones will soon have easy eSIM transfers: all the details

eSIM is the digital avatar of physical SIM cards used in smartphones. It’s a handy technology, but transferring an eSIM card from one device to another is a hassle, but Android is finally ready to fix that problem. Google made the announcement this week at Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023) in Barcelona and will share its plans for Android later this year.

“We’re bringing a new eSIM transfer feature to Android that allows users to quickly and securely transfer their mobile plan to a new device without a physical SIM card,” Google mentioned in this
post

. Although the company does not mention which version of Android will get this support, it is likely that the Android 14 version that will be released this year will have this feature.

Google has partnered with Deutsche Telekom to offer this simple and secure eSIM migration for Android phones. However, we still don’t know the in-depth details of this secure transfer and how it works on the device. And we hope that Google will work with more telecom operators to support this feature. eSIM cards have mostly found their way into premium phones, which has made it easy for operators to support the technology.

You even have them on smartwatches with LTE support. But for the feature to go mainstream, the tedious process of switching from one device to another needs to be stopped. Google is expected to learn more about this technology later this year at Google I/O 2023, where it will also present the feature and its use cases to developers and phone manufacturers.

But when we talk about the spread of eSIM in the coming years, there is already strong demand for another technology called Integrated SIM or iSIM, which comes via Qualcomm, which has been testing it with a modified version of its latest Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset together with Thales. The iSIM is said to be smaller in size and, as the name suggests, integrated into a chip. It is also claimed to be energy efficient.
