Meta’s Llama Model Engineers Departing

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched his own generative AI bot earlier this year, called LLaMA or Large Language Model Meta AI. After the release of the first generation LLaMA, Facebook’s parent company Meta partnered with Microsoft to develop Llama 2.

However, when the social media giant introduced two AI models in less than a year, it is said to be a big problem. According to a report by The Information, some of the scientists and engineers who worked on Llama have left Meta and joined other companies or AI startups.

Meta recently released two big-name models, Llama and Llama 2, which were praised for being free and open source alternatives to OpenAI and Anthropic’s models. However, some scientists and engineers involved in Llama felt the recognition came too late, according to the report.

According to the report, a dispute over the availability of computing resources within the company led to this situation. This “previously unannounced” competition forced “embittered” employees to resign.

“Many have quit, embittered by a previously unreported internal battle over computing resources with another Meta research team that was working on a competing model that was ultimately abandoned by the company,” the report said.

Released in July, Llama 2 is the successor to Llama, which was able to generate text and code like other chatbot systems. It is freely available for both research and commercial purposes.

Llama 2 is a collection of models that can generate text and code in response to prompts, comparable to other chatbot-type systems. It is a large language model (LLM) that is more powerful and efficient than previous models. It is trained on a huge dataset of text and code and can produce more creative and informative text than Google’sBard or ChatGPT.

Meta has trained Llama 2 using a combination of publicly available data. According to Meta, its performance has improved significantly compared to the previous generation Llama models.
