Meta’s Twitter-like decentralized platform UI mock-ups leaked online
Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October, reports suggest that Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has been developing its own social media platform, known as Project 92. During a recent company meeting, Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, presented a series of UI mock-ups to staff, which were subsequently leaked online.
The project’s existence was first officially confirmed in March, when the company told reporters: “We are exploring an independent decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where content creators and public figures can share timely updates about their own content and interests.” In May, design images shared internally were also leaked online.
The new platform, which Cox called “the answer to Twitter,” will be a standalone program based on Instagram that integrates ActivityPub, the same web protocol that powers Mastodon. The leaked images include an image of a secure login screen; a main feed that looks suspiciously like Twitter’s existing mobile app; and response screen. There is no word yet on when the app will be publicly available.
“We’ve heard from creators and public figures who are interested in a sensibly managed platform that they believe they can trust and rely on for distribution,” Cox said, according to a report by the Verge. Celebrities such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama have reportedly joined the project.
