In response to ongoing concerns from parents about child safety on the Meta platform, Instagram is testing a new feature to protect its teenage users. This decision follows pressure from US and European governments, and aims to improve safety on the platform. Learn more about how the nudity protection feature on Instagram will function.

Instagram nudity protection feature for DMs

Meta supports teenagers from sex discipline and misuse of intimate photos by bringing new features to Instagram. Sextortion is a new emerging scam that involves sexual blackmail, threats, sharing adult images and more. According to the Meta blog, the upcoming feature will make it challenging for scammers and criminals to interact with and manipulate teenage users. In addition, the company is also working on new measures to help young people identify scammers and how they can protect themselves. Instagram is currently testing nudity protection in DMs, which accurately blurs an image if it is detected as containing nudity. This feature uses on-device machine learning to detect and analyze images sent in Instagram DMs.

Meta emphasized that when this feature is fully completed, it will be enabled by default for users under 18. For adults, a notification will pop up encouraging users to use the feature for their safety. Meta said: “Because the images are analyzed on the device itself, nudity protection also works in end-to-end encrypted conversations where Meta cannot access these images – unless someone chooses to report them to us.” This tool is expected to go live next week, making the Meta platforms a safer space for teenagers. Meta also offers tips and support to users, such as the Meta Security Center, helplines, StopNCII.org for users over 18, and “Take It Down” for users under 18.
