Learn How to Format WhatsApp Messages with Bold, Italics, Strikethrough, and Other Options

Texting has become much more than just a means of communication. Most people today want to stay in touch with the people around them. Therefore, a plain, simple message may not be able to convey what people want to say.

Most SMS programs only allow you to send a simple text – nothing fancy. WhatsApp is an exception in that case, as the user has the option to format the text before sending it. You can bold the words in the paragraphs you want to emphasize, or select italics to make your text stand out, and more.

How to format your WhatsApp text?

There are two options: use your phone’s built-in features to select bold, strikethrough, or special characters around the text you want to convert.

If you’re using your phone with built-in features, you can see the formatting menu on your Android device by long-touching the word you’re typing. You can select multiple words by pressing the buttons on either side of the selection to expand it. Then choose one of four formatting options: bold, italic, strikethrough, or single space.

If you don’t see them all, click the three-dot button on the right for a full list of formatting options. Alternatively, if you’re using iOS, double-tap the text you typed. Then select BIU and choose what you want to do, i.e. bold, italic, strikethrough, or one-sided.

On the other hand, if you want to format the text using special characters, you need to do the following:

Italicize the text by adding an underline to both sides of the text: _text_Bold the text or paragraph by adding asterisks to both sides of the words you choose: *textYou can use the strikethrough feature in your text by using a wavy line on both sides. From message: ~text~If you want to make a space in your message, put three backslashes on both sides: “”text” “You can also put quotes, bullet points and other options in WhatsApp.

If you want to duplicate these in the same text, make sure you place the special characters for each formatting style in the correct place. One way to do this correctly is to mirror the characters at each end. For example-

*_italics and bold_*~*bold and strikethrough*~_~strikethrough and italics~_
